I realized something was deeply wrong when I discovered 4 full-time employees did not have their work emails connected to their phones.
Not ignored.
Not buried.
Not connected.
Which explained a lot.
The slow responses.
The missed follow-ups.
The strange silence after important requests.
The feeling that every task required a reminder, a check-in, a follow-up, and finally a “just circling back :)” sent with the emotional restraint of a hostage negotiator.
At first I thought we had a workflow issue.
Then I thought maybe I was communicating poorly.
Then eventually I realized:
small businesses are now expected to provide professional development while simultaneously paying experienced-level salaries.
And I don’t think society has fully processed how unsustainable this is becoming.
Somewhere between startup culture and social media entrepreneurship, we accidentally erased apprenticeship.
Everyone is a founder now.
A strategist.
A creative director.
A consultant.
A personal brand.
But increasingly, very few people know how to function operationally inside an organization.
And before anyone says:
“People deserve fair wages.”
Yes.
They do.
That is not the point.
The point is that startups are not giant corporations with training departments, onboarding infrastructure, and endless payroll flexibility.
When a small business hires someone, that salary is attached directly to sacrifice.
That paycheck may literally equal:
inventory not purchased,
marketing delayed,
production slowed,
or the founder quietly deciding they themselves will not get paid this month.
Small business payroll is emotional.
It is not abstract.
And yet many founders now find themselves hiring adults while simultaneously teaching:
how to monitor email,
how to communicate updates,
how to manage time,
how to complete tasks without reminders,
and how to understand that replying “just saw this!” three days later is not actually a workflow system.
The modern startup has somehow become:
part employer,
part university,
and part rehabilitation center for professional habits people were supposed to develop earlier.
And I genuinely don’t know when this happened.
Because there is a difference between mentorship and operational dependency.
That difference matters.
When every responsibility requires prompting and emotional cushioning, the founder slowly stops building a company and starts managing human drift full-time.
That is the part nobody glamorizes online.
Not the operational fatigue.
Not the constant micro-management.
Not the founder wondering at 2AM whether payroll was a mistake.
We romanticized entrepreneurship so aggressively that we forgot businesses exist to survive.
Not every startup can afford to be a learning laboratory.
Especially when the people learning expect salaries traditionally attached to already having learned.
And maybe the most controversial thing I will say is this:
Entry-level work was never just labor.
It was formation.
At some point, the founder stops running a company and starts homeschooling adulthood.
